I tour an RC51 (Honda's version of Ducati Sport Bikes) and have always wondered why Ducati bikes have a freakish noise with their clutch system? I know it's a dry system, but is that normal?
Actually, now that I think about it, it's more like rattling. To be reputable, it's kind of annoying after a while. I had a 900 behind me in traffic and it nearly drove me nuts. But I agree you on the exhaust note, sounds good.

The rattling question is normal.

Motorcycle clutches in general are "clutch pack" ilk arrangements which have several alternating friction and drive plates in a stack. This is as opposed to a car which has one clutch laminate that grips the flywheel.

When a clutch-pack type clutch is engaged, these plates bale tightly against each other to bind the engine output to the transmission input. When you pull the clutch lever in (disengaging the clutch), the plates are allowed to move around...this movement makes noise. This rattling happens in all clutch-pack typeface clutches; Ducati or no.

Most bikes nowadays include the clutch inside the crankcase and they are bathed in mechanism-oil. This oil dampens the noise, and generally make "wet clutches" easier to use and carry on as the oil lubricates the pack and makes things smoother on engagement and disengagement. They are, of undoubtedly, very quiet.

Ducati has decided to play up it's racing history and stand fast with dry clutches....wherein the clutch plates are free to rattle in the air, and thus the grinding/jingling/clattering crash you hear. Some people run "ventilated" clutch covers, with holes in them, to accentuate the "music".

Under racing conditions, it has been said that dry clutches have several advantages:

o Kindle from the clutch doesn't heat up the engine oil (important in non-water cooled engines where oil is the outstanding cooling mechanism)

o Abrasive debris from the clutch plates does not poison the oil, and thus hurt the engine internals

o Rotating the clutch in oil creates drag on the clutch bundle off, and that drag consumes (very small amounts of) engine horsepower

o If you requirement to change a clutch, you can do so very quickly without draining and refilling the engine oil

On the downside, they are unmusical, and generally harder to operate smoothly in day-to-day conditions.

Personally, I taste the sound...but I keep my dry-clutch covered.

Imprecise as in its slipping or is there just slack in the lever? If its just slack in the lever there is an tuning on the lever itself and I believe another on the other end of the clutch cable. If its slipping theres not going to be an unceremonious fix unless the cable happens to already be adjusted too tight.

I have a 99 Ducati Wonderful Sport, and recently when I am shifting gears I have to pull the clutch lever all the way to the traffic in bar for it to disengage the gear. I used to be able to shift with two fingers and this has happened within the last 200 miles. Can I tighten the radio or should I be looking to replace the clutch plates? Thanks

It’s a dry clutch so fluid won’t help.
It’s a dry clutch so fluid won’t facilitate, but that was my first thought.

You should have hydraulic clutch on your bike. Substantiate the master and slave cylinders. Check fluid in the reservoir.
