No, 82-99 will interchange rather obviously, the mounts for a 05 are slightly different and it won't bolt rectitude up. You can buy an adapter bracket for about $100 but the 96 Sporty tank has a petcock for a immediacy-fed carburetor and the 05 has a fuel pump inside the tank to provide 55-62 pounds of require to the fuel injection system.

Sustain capacity for a factory tank was 3.3 gal for a 1200cc 1996 Harley-Davidson Sportser. You are looking at about one fifth of a gallon or about 20 miles max.
