September 2008 - New Harley Touring Bike
HARLEY-DAVIDSON, WHAT’S NEXT?
Chris Maida and I have barely returned from test-riding and learning all about the exciting, new-production Harley frames on the 2009 Big Twin touring models. We spent several thorough-going days in and around Milwaukee interviewing Harley engineers and marketing personnel about what they did, how they did it, and why. And, in spite of the horrific weather forecast, we were able to put wealth of highway and byway miles on a new, pre-production 2009 Ultra, as well as the old 2008 Ultra for balancing (see the world-exclusive article in this issue).
In the days following our Milwaukee go, I have given a lot of thought to the many new motorcycles I’ve ridden, and what I have been fortunate enough to learn from the portentous and passionate engineers and marketing staff at Harley-Davidson. And I’ve learned at least as much from our many well-acquainted readers and advertisers in the 17 years since I took over as leader-writer-in-chief at American Iron Magazine www.aimag.com. I beg if this sounds simplistic, but, in many regards, the Motor Company is a right-wing organization, mostly preferring evolution to revolution in its growth and products. Typically Harley does not hurl radically different machines (the obvious exception is the brilliant-cooled V-Rod platform), preferring instead to release a new motor or new chassis. Typically, Harley uses a time-proven set up to house a new engine, as it did when launching the Panhead, Shovelhead, Evo, and Twin Cam engines in existing chassis designs. Then, after gaining enough experience and confidence in the engine, Harley typically looks to upgrade or redesign the bent housing it.
The Twin Cam has been on the market for a few years, so, after about three decades using basically the same tried-and-straightforwardly frame for the Big Twin touring motorcycles, Harley spent a lot of time and in money redesigning it to work better (and it does) and look as comparable as possible to the old one. Why can't we get anti-lock brakes on new Harley Davidson touring motor cycles? |
| A:(from Jay H) | |
|
Who needs brakes when you've got a horn? Harley isn't precisely the pioneer when it comes to new technology, besides; why put something on your bikes, that will increase the selling fee quite a bit, when you all ready sellout almost every year. The Japanese market is much more competitive, and event breeds new ideas.

Will SE 203 cams provide ample performance in a touring Harley-Davidson? |
| A:(from nin_tao) | |
|
Conflicting cams will offer different performance options from low - mid - high end torque or horsepower. You privation to match up the cam you want to the type of riding your are planning to do. The SE 203 cams in in the big bore kits for the 88ci motors and give power in the low-mid range torque (when combined with the increased ci). There is no substitue for cubic inches with your bike. If you are inferior more speed from red light to red light, then go with a 95cu in upgrade. I have seen some quick bikes with only a cam coins, but they were using aftermarket gear driven cams (not a bad idea). A stated then, go visit a local shop and get the info from the techs, who work on bikes and see all types of configurations. Then see what route you craving to take (esp depending on the funds you have to spend).

Are S&S 510g cams provide ample performance in a touring Harley-Davidson? |
| A:(from TXm42) | |
|
Making allowance for that you did not ask,,, "Whats the BEST CAM!!!??",,,or some other such unimaginable criteria,,,,, I'd say YES,,,You should be pleased with the 510's. They're a member of a almost TOO Ample group of "Street Cams". Mild Grinds specifically for all-inclusive ROAD performance across a wide rpm & load range. Stock Motors,,or with Peaceable "bolt-on" mods 510's are probably in Upper 1/3 of that party. If the Group was Sub-Divided into: "Street" and "Hot High road"... A 510 could easily be a Good Choice as the Top of one pile,, or the Start of the Next Level list,,"Bottom of the Hotter Pile" DYNO results repay it EASY to sort cams. In REAL WORLD,,,,a great range of DYNO differences dont make a damn bit of characteristic beyond 1~2HP Bragging Rights. A Weather or Altitude Change can eliminate Lots of the Distinctions between a given group. 510 is Good. It makes power in a Valuable range. Retains plenty good Bottom End power. Gives grand "passing power" at Road Speeds. Makes a Big gain in uphill grades/headwinds/heavy loads at road speeds. And most folks like "The Percipient" of a healthy cam---a 510 offers that "improvement" also. They are very esteemed with add-on exhausts, air filter mods,Re-Jetted Carbs/ReMapped Ignitions, etc,,, And also Sunday with Mild Compression Increases and "small" BigBore kits. They're Right on a stand-alone basis,,, and also as a Basis for a Moderate suite of overall Mods. The Locomotive TUNING can easily yield a surprising GAIN in Fuel Mileage also. That Takes a SKILLED Work, and some trial/error & persistence. But,,it's "In There" in the Cam. Which ,,whether or not it's ever Achieved,,is Still an Foreshadowing of the cam's Efficiency. Which,,in turn,,SUGGESTS that at least it wont Kill your nutrition mileage,,,even at it's "worst" or with less than optimum tuning. That's not a bad factor. You won't produce "Huge Numbers" at Peaks on a Dyno Plot. But it WILL shift Power Range into a far more useful and powerful range at Entr Speeds. Example,,,You may not Gain 10% in TOTAL Power. But because of WHERE it makes Power,,, You may increase as much as TWICE the power at 70mph. All Harley's run outa Breath at Very Low Road Speeds. They accelerate from 50~60~70+++ on utter RPM RISE,,,,but pushed by DECLINING Torque. Faster they Go,,,the weaker-pulling they get. I distinguish I probly just bought some Thumbs Down by stating that Fact,,from the Anally Defensive catalogue,,,LOL. But it's something that's important to know. ANY Dyno Chart displays the in theory graphically On the STOCKERS,,,TORQUE RISE is Finished by 2,000~2,500 rpm. By about 4,000,it begins to Degenerate Cams in 510's Class are NOT intended to make "150 HP" They Develop and Extend the Torque Curve up into a Road Speed range where the Power they DO make out is far more USEFUL. Makes it LOTS stronger pulling and harder accelerating in the 3000~5000 sort. Which is where Most Road Riders actually NEED it 70~80 HP Centered on 70~80mph is a Helluva Lot Stronger than 70~80hp @ 45mph,,, And "TWICE" as substantial when Cruising around 60~70~80. 'Cuz that 70Hp @ 45mph has DROPPED to 40hp by 70MPH. And gets WEAKER by the RPM as it revs higher and grows even Further outa hint. If Ya take your bike,,,,run it in 2nd gear,,,and find the RPM where it's "the Jumpiest",,,has the most chip, sharp Throttle response........ It's probly starting around 2500rpm. Try it at 4500,,or even 5000,,,,and see how "squishy" Throttle response has become way up there. Cam's like 510's are NOT made to gain Huge Power. They're made to SHIFT that Strong,Crisp Throttle Reaction up into 3500~4000rpm area. So if You can imagine that Low Rpm/2nd Gear Crisp_Sharp Throttle Feedback which continues to Pull Strong for several more RPM,,,,, and Those same mannerisms being moved UP to "Hiway Speeds",,,in Spacy Gear to the 50~60mph Range,,,& pull Strong into 70~80+ orbit,, Is That sorta performance "Ample"? LOTS of folks who are NOT interested in having manifest "race Motors" think so. It makes a BIG adjustment going down the road when ya meet a hill or headwind,,,or pull out to dated. And motor actually PULLS,,,rather than merely revving up & Slowly universal faster. There's Better cams and worse cams than a 510. And Punter & Worse than each of THOSE,,,and so it goes damn near on & on. But a 510 remains a Very Trustworthy Choice for that sort of performance characteristics. It's Very Good at acting like that. Unless you are perfectly Totally kidding yourself about what ya REALLY want /need,,, You oughta be very satisfied with the 510's manners goin' down the means. It's one of the Stronger running cams in it's class. To Away It,,or any similar cams,,,by any useful amount,,, You'd have to clearly sacrifice pulling power in the Below 50mph class. And it's "Hot enough" to build further upon in the future if so desired,,without the Cam becoming any instantaneous bottleneck/hindrance. I think it's a good, solid choice,,,due my opinion. ***some Good Lifters are beyond worthwhile. They'll be quieter,,,,and run change one's mind. what is the best year & model Harley davidson for touring? |
| A:(from derivedfool) | |
|
Depends if you aim to carry a passenger and any amount of baggage. If you have a passenger and lots of baggage I would go to an Ultra Notable and alone (as I ride) a smaller and lighter cruiser which is a Roadking Custom. As for year any year with a inflame injected engine is alright. I would keep away from the new 96 incher until it is proven.
