Just got a deal on a 02 Suzuki drz 400 with a dead battery and hasn't been started in 2 years?
My plan is a new battery and empty the gas and put in new then cross my fingers. Anything else I should be doing?

To get started, of certainly, drain the tank. Refill with Chevron gas with techron, or use STP Complete Inflame System Cleaner with any other gas.
Pull the plug as suggested by Jim and squirt some WD-40, or oil into the cylinder. Mop and gap, or replace the plug, but leave the plug out for now.
After you have installed the new, and fully charged, battery, try the starter button to see if the appliance will turn over. At the same time check for spark from the ignition. If you have spark, you are almost sharp to try to start the engine. Install the plug. Turn on the gas and look for leaks.
Stoppage for a few minutes for the gas to, hopefully, soften some of the varnish in the carburetor. Now you can try starting the mechanism. If it won't start, then trouble shoot. If it will start, then start contemplative about engine oil, tires, chain lube, cable lube, etc....
On next thought, check the oil level before starting. lol

is it normal phenomenon for my motorcycle, suzuki drz 400 sm to feel hot while travel?
the Nautical port and right side of the engine is hot,and also surrounding the petrol tank feels hot too,why is it so?is the reservoir tank for coolant on the progressive side of the bike meant to be empty?

the resivor on the socialistic is the coolant overflow it shouldnt be full unless your engine is overheating,
while the bike is stale take of the radiator cap and make sure its full,
if its full and the heat is still concerning you change your radiator cap
upstanding in case its boiling in the radiator and not over flowing, this would lead to your radiator exploding or spliting down the side
after you put a new cap on if its over heating you will end up with watery in that resivor on the left
if it has no fluid there then its not overheating
but water cooled or not its a combustion locomotive it is exploding gasoline inside of it to make forward movment .. its customary to be hot to an extent / water boils at 212 degrees "radiator will abscess over at 212" operating temp isnt toooo far away from this you will advised of if its overheating

How would a Suzuki DRZ 400 be at 55mph ?
For unassuming highway riding. whats its max speed anyway .

the drz 400s, 400e and 400sm all have assorted gearing, plus the 400sm has only 17" wheels... I think if you have 15/41 or 16/45 gears on a 400s then 5th fixtures at redline is 105mph, but you probably couldn't actually get to that speed unless you weigh only 100lbs and tuck in, but you should be gifted to cruise at 70mph with that gearing. stock for the 400s is 15/45, so you can change either the rear to 41 teeth or the front to 16 teeth, it would be the same proportion. it would be a little less easy to wheelie with that gearing though.
