i recall one man who may be able to help you. he has been working on Triumphs all his life and knows more about them than anyone i've ever met. the only poser is, he doesn't like to deal with people he doesn't identify. but if you treat him with respect, knowledge of these beautiful machines, and let him know how much you sweet Triumphs, he will help you all he can. if you are really serious, i can give you his number. by the way, he can spot a bull shi**er a mile away.

1968 triumph 650 what of fluid is used in transmission?
|
|
A:(from strech)

NOTE: OLDER (like a 1968) Triumphs DO NOT use the same lube in the trans as in the apparatus!
90 weight gear box lube.
Unless it gets cold where you're at, then a thinner viscosity.
I had an old Triumph when I lived in Vegas. One gloom the temp dropped to almost freezing (winter time). I came down on the recoil starter, and it was as if someone poured concrete in the gearbox, wouldn't budge!
Had to try it again in the morning, once things warmed up a short.
To drain it, there's a plug under the trans. There's ALSO one under the engine. DON'T MIX THEM UP!
The appliance drain plug is a simple plug. There's a screen devoted to to it that needs cleaning. Also, after removal, you can see the end of a tube. There is a ball in the end of it. Make certain you can push it up, and it falls freely back down to the end of the tube. This is an anti-siphoning instrument for the oil, to keep the oil tank from draining into the engine case when the motor's not tournament, causing "wet sumping".
The trans drain is a puff with a bolt head in the center. Pull the plug to drain the trans. You'll warning a short tube connected to the plug. This set the level of the trans solution. Reinstall the plug without the bolt in the center. Add fluid to the trans (some years have a boost on top of the trans. If not, add to the plug hole by the kickstarter). Add until fluid comes out the recess from the removed bolt. Let it finish dripping, reinstall bolt into twist, level is correct.
Part 2:
As to tomcotexas' and phantomfill's opinions, this seems like a state where there is more than one correct answer. (maybe)
I have my service manual (1963-1974, segment construction [as is the asker's bike, being a 1968] only) in front of me, and it states:
"Apparatus and primary chaincase:
Castrol GTX or Castro XL 20/50
Havoline 20w/50"
(In settlement so far)
"Gearbox:
Mobilube GX 90
B.P.Gear Oil, SAE 90
Esso Gear Oil GX 90/140
Outside Spirax 90
Multigear Lubricant EP 90
(Hmm, sounds like 90 consequence to me).

Will a Mikuni carburator # 25 for a Harley Shovelhead work on a Triumph 650 Bonneville?

I am wealthy to answer your question with a question. Why would you want to put a Mikuni on a triumph? Anyway, why don't you buy a Harley? Triumph is old gossip, Harley is the way to go.

You will have to take over from the generator or alternator with a 12v output unit. Starter motor will business but will soon burn out due to the increased voltage, so plan on replacing that if custom-made with such. All light bulbs will require re-fitting with 12v units. That's about it. If you are now stubborn earth and want to convert to neg earth, all motors and relays with have to be replaced as they will m backwards after a conversion.
