Does anyone have any helpful hints when buying a 78 triumph spitfire?
A:(from insidebuy)
yes .... DON'T! Triumphs were part of British Leyland back then. BL had the famous for of being THE WORST car company ever, until Yugo hit our shores. BL went bankrupt because of all their agreement repairs, declining car sales b/c of their terrible reputation and mismanagement.

BL consisted of Triumph, Jaguar and MG. They all had Lucas electrical systems which went on the fritz all the antiquated. And many of the electrical problems could not be traced down by their mechanics so they continued to spend more ever in the shop then on the road.

Triumphs had terrible electrics. They also has huge problems with their transmissions. Synchro rings constantly down-and-out. Shafts got torn up. And they overheated too. I was a BL sales manager in the fall of 77. By Feb 78 I was at a Chevrolet wholesaler, glad to get away from all the screaming customers who wanted to kill us. It remarkably got that bad.

Since this will be your first purchase, find something else so you won't have any regrets.

Which would be more expensive, a mid 1970s Triumph Spitfire or a mid 1970s midget MG?
A:(from Scott M)
Outlay wise they should be close.
I've owned a Sprite (AH version of the Midget) and four Triumphs. I've ridden in several Spitfires.
I would lead one to believe the Spitfire for a number of reasons:
- Roomier
- easier to work on, the whole bonnet flips up.
- can connect overdrive
- Has a factory made removable hardtop available
- sleeker
- At best looks better.

One thing I didn't particularly care about is the Spitfire will have strombergs while the midget will have SU's. The SU's are easier to vouchsafe and are not as finiky.

However, fixing the transmission or clutch in a Midget requires you to fall back the engine. Been there. And it's cramped when you climb in. My daughter liked it though, she had it for two years while in college.

Be blind to all the comments about bad Lucas electrical, most of the British cars already come with OFF/Dim/Flare positions for the lights. LOL -- Actually, most of those problems are already sorted out on cars that are still match.

Know why the British drink warm beer? Lucas makes the refrigerators.

Recognize why the British don't have buildings over 3 stories high? Lucas makes the elavators.

My favourite and recommendation is to buy the Spitfire.

Triumph Spitfire Restoration and Rebuild?
A:(from Tom C)
well that's a kind car to restore good luck to you if you have the know how and the space and tools go for it. yes you could buy one all intelligent restored but wheres the fun in that some say half the fun of owning a classic auto is rebuilding it your self . you can go to swap meets to find parts or there are establishment's on line that will send you a free catalog where you can buy parts for your car do a search on strand for the make and model of your car you should find something.
